How does the BYOB extract kit work? +

The BYOB kit contains 60 mL (that’s ¼ cup) coconut oil infused with 100 mg of THC cannabis extract and a measured dropper. To use, pick a recipe or mix to enhance with cannabis, then simply substitute the oil or fat in the recipe with the desired amount of BYOB oil.

For example, if your chocolate chip cookie recipe calls for ½ cup of butter, then use the jar of BYOB (a total of ¼ cup of coconut oil with THC cannabis extract) + ¼ cup of butter. Use some sort of measuring device to evenly portion out the batter into your desired yield – let’s say 24 cookies. Since the entire jar of BYOB contains 100 mg of THC cannabis, then each cookie will contain approximately 4.2 mg THC (100 mg THC/24 cookies).

To make cookies with less THC, either use less BYOB or make the cookies smaller (in other words, either use half the jar of BYOB or make 48 mini-cookies so each cookies contains approximately 2 mg THC).

See our How To Use BYOB page for detailed instructions, more examples, and recipe suggestions.

How do I figure out serving size when I use the BYOB extract kit? +

The BYOB kit is ¼ cup or 60 mL of coconut oil infused with 100 mg of THC cannabis extract. It comes in a jar equipped with a 1 mL dropper for your measuring convenience. One full dropper contains 1.7 mg THC and is an appropriate amount for one single dose. The entire bottle of BYOB is an amount you'd add to an entire batch of brownies that will split into 33 pieces where piece contains 3 mg of THC cannabis extract.

The takeaway here is that you can vary the amount of THC per serving by varying portions or by varying how much BYOB you put in your recipe. It’s important to make a plan before you start baking…

Please refer to our How To Use BYOB page for detailed instructions, recipe suggestions and guidance on portioning. Whatever you do, start small and label your creation with how many mg of THC are in each serving. Store your creation in a safe place away from children.

Why shouldn’t I make my own cannabis butter or extract at home? +

OK, so maybe you do have a spare bag of cannabis flower or shake laying around, and you’ve thought, “Hey, I can throw this into a crock pot with some butter or coconut oil and I’ll make my own weed butter or oil to cook with!”

That’s amateur. Here’s why:

First of all, how strong is your homemade weed butter or oil? You have no way of knowing. And, are you ready to take on decarboxylation? Not likely. Plus, throwing your flower or shake in a crock pot with oil or butter is guaranteed to stink up your house.

This is California – cannabis is legal! Get thee to a dispensary for some BYOB and eliminate the burdensome task of making your own weed butter or oil. With BYOB, you are guaranteed 100 mg THC extract. Lab tested. Extracted from 100% sustainable Humboldt County cannabis. You know exactly what you’re getting.

Get BYOB …because you don’t have a bunch of spare cannabis laying around. …because if you do make your own butter or extract (assuming you are not a licensed manufacturer), the strength of your butter or extract will be a mystery. …because you don’t want to deal with decarboxylation. …because you don’t want to stink up the house and make a mess trying to make cannabis-infused coconut oil in your crockpot. …because you like to use cannabis on the down low.

BYOB ensures a level of certainty when it comes to dosing and quality. It is designed to make your homemade edible baking sessions clean, precise and easy.

Save yourself the headache and the mess… Check out our Where to Buy BYOB page to find a BYOB retailer near you.

Why is the BYOB extract kit made with coconut oil? +

We use coconut oil in the BYOB extract kit because it has a neutral flavor and because it doesn’t break down at high temperatures. (In other words, it’s stable with a high smoke point!). We also use it because it’s so damn good for you. Coconut oil is rich in natural saturated fats – the good healthy fats that increase HDL cholesterol, help digestion and make you smarter.

Chances are, if you’re into healthy eats and skin and hair care routines, you know all about the benefits of coconut oil. It was the natural choice for our BYOB blend.

What is the difference between the Indica and Sativa versions of the BYOB extract kit? +

The two predominant types of cannabis on the retail market are Indicas and Sativas. Truth is, most popular cannabis strains are hybrids — part Indica, part Sativa. Indica-dominant strains of cannabis are on the relaxing, tranquil end of the spectrum. Sativa-dominant strains are known for their cerebral effects, meaning they energize and enliven people.

We offer Indica and Sativa versions of BYOB, both containing 100 mg of THC extract derived from cannabis flowers sourced exclusively from small producers in Humboldt County. If you need an uplifting, zesty cannabis experience, cook with the Sativa BYOB kit. If you need to mellow out, cook with the Indica BYOB.

We recommend keeping both versions on hand, so you’ll always have exactly what you need. And keep your eyes peeled for the CBD version of BYOB — coming soon!

Where can I get some recipe inspiration? +

The BYOB extract kit is coconut oil infused with THC cannabis extract. You can use it in a variety of recipes — sweets, snacks or savories — as long as the recipe calls for fat. The fat in the recipe could be butter, vegetable oil, coconut oil… To use, simply substitute the oil (fat) in the recipe with the desired amount BYOB oil.
